The Mystery Bag is a sensorial material that helps the child refine his stereognostic sense. The bag holds small objects that the child identifies by touch alone. That’s a simple way of describing the stereognostic sense – recognizing an object by feeling it instead of by looking at it. But it’s really more than that. The stereognostic sense is a higher brain function that combines tactile and muscular sensory input for texture, form, and weight into a coherent experience of an object. Refining the stereognostic sense builds the child’s ability to discriminate sizes and shapes through touch. It also indirectly builds spatial awareness, logic, and the ability to form abstractions – important skills for math and language!
