Montessori and Brain Research: Moving Forward

NAMC Montessori ams conference brain research teacher and child work with mirrorLast week, NAMC tutor Collean G. attended the AMS Conference in San Francisco and made the most of her time there, taking in as many of the conference offerings as possible. One of her favorite workshops was an inspiring presentation by JoAnn Deak, PhD, entitled “The First Magic Decade: Windows of Neurosensitivity in Children from Birth to Age 10.” Dr. Deak’s expertise encompasses brain research, gender issues, and education (school life).

Brain research is a fairly recent and growing field of study, and we think Dr. Montessori would be excited to learn that her observation and theories about early childhood development are now being examined and supported through scientific research.

We’ll have more to share on Collean’s trip in upcoming posts. For now, you may find Dr. Deak’s book interesting: Your Fantastic, Elastic Brain.

As much as possible, NAMC’s web blog reflects the Montessori curriculum as provided in its teacher training programs. We realize and respect that Montessori schools are unique and may vary their schedules and offerings in accordance with the needs of their individual communities. We hope that our readers will find our articles useful and inspiring as a contribution to the global Montessori community.
