NAMC chose history because they feel strongly that it is important for children to learn about their own country’s heritage the Montessori way, using the same principles and Montessori materials as found in the NAMC World History manual.The NAMC US History manual focuses on the history of the US from its first inhabitants to the Declaration of Independence. Later sections introduce some of the significant events and developments that took place from the late 1800s to 1945, and there are numerous, creative suggestions for ways students can explore the history of their own state, and provides basic information about the US people and system of government. The manual includes these main topics:
- Indigenous peoples
- Exploration and settlement by Europeans
- Colonial America
- The forming of the United States of America
- Technological and social changes, 1800–1914
- Effect of the world wars and other events, 1914–1945
- The states
- The American people
- Government, politics, and citizenship
In an earlier blog, I wrote how impressed I was when I received my review copy. I showed it to my Montessori colleagues and they were impressed by the beautiful full-color images that are utilized throughout the manual as well as the detailed lessons and activities for the students. My son, who attends a Montessori elementary school, commented on how beautiful it was and asked if he could read through the manual. Of course, my Montessori students were immediately curious and wondered when we were going to get a chance to start using it in our classroom!
I’m not the only one who is impressed by this new addition to the NAMC curriculum. Over 200 Montessori schools across the United States have already received their free NAMC US History manual. Here’s what other Montessori teachers are saying about the manual:

I am really enjoying working with the new History album! This year we are rushing through it and not trying all of the activities, but next year I plan on cycling it more evenly. How I'm using it right now is that I tell the stories as if I'm storytelling and the children seem much more interested than my previous attempts to teach History. I peruse the manual as I'm telling the stories, interjecting at times, giving other examples that I know of as we go along, etc., and we create a discussion out of it as well. I assess their retention by quizzing them, doing research, some of the activities, and even creating our own activities and agreeing upon them as a class. This helps all of our different learning styles achieve success within the units.

Thank you for letting us know about how you are using the United States History Album in your Montessori classroom. The stories told by the Great Lessons in the Montessori Curriculum give such credence to using the art of storytelling to inspire children to want to learn more. How wonderful to see you using the story telling technique in your United States history lessons. I’m sure it leaves your students wanting to find out more. I also enjoyed hearing how this addresses the different learning styles in your Montessori classroom. I hope you and your students enjoy these United States history lessons for years to come.
