NAMC Proud to Donate a FREE US History Manual to Every Montessori Elementary School in the USA!

One of the reasons I love teaching history is watching the children understand their place in the world. The Great Lessons and Cosmic Education provide a way for children to really grasp the enormity of the universe and how it all fits together. Studying World History gives children the opportunity to understand that humans all have the same fundamental needs, and to recognize and appreciate how other cultures meet these needs. Learning about their own culture and heritage helps children develop patriotism and an understanding of the events that have happened, important historical figures, and historical places and objects of their own country. It provides a unifying cultural literacy that improves their cultural, environmental, and community awareness.

NAMC chose history because they feel strongly that it is important for children to learn about their own country’s heritage the Montessori way, using the same principles and Montessori materials as found in the NAMC World History manual.

The NAMC US History manual focuses on the history of the US from its first inhabitants to the Declaration of Independence. Later sections introduce some of the significant events and developments that took place from the late 1800s to 1945, and there are numerous, creative suggestions for ways students can explore the history of their own state, and provides basic information about the US people and system of government. The manual includes these main topics:

There are also more than ten pages of additional print and web resources for both Montessori teachers and their students for further ideas and research. For more details, see US History album Table of Contents.
In an earlier blog, I wrote how impressed I was when I received my review copy. I showed it to my Montessori colleagues and they were impressed by the beautiful full-color images that are utilized throughout the manual as well as the detailed lessons and activities for the students. My son, who attends a Montessori elementary school, commented on how beautiful it was and asked if he could read through the manual. Of course, my Montessori students were immediately curious and wondered when we were going to get a chance to start using it in our classroom!

I’m not the only one who is impressed by this new addition to the NAMC curriculum. Over 200 Montessori schools across the United States have already received their free NAMC US History manual. Here’s what other Montessori teachers are saying about the manual:

"I have only recently been aware of the tremendously beautiful materials you create, but now I am a firm believer in your training center."

"I can guarantee that I will be exploring in further detail the materials you offer. The History Manual is fantastic and I look forward to applying the lessons."

"The information is beautifully illustrated and presented in a format that is easy to read and understand. Thanks, this manual is a treasure!"

If your school has already received a NAMC US History manual, I invite you to submit your comments and reviews here.
As much as possible, NAMC’s web blog reflects the Montessori curriculum as provided in its teacher training programs. We realize and respect that Montessori schools are unique and may vary their schedules and offerings in accordance with the needs of their individual communities. We hope that our readers will find our articles useful and inspiring as a contribution to the global Montessori community.

  3. I am really enjoying working with the new History album! This year we are rushing through it and not trying all of the activities, but next year I plan on cycling it more evenly. How I'm using it right now is that I tell the stories as if I'm storytelling and the children seem much more interested than my previous attempts to teach History. I peruse the manual as I'm telling the stories, interjecting at times, giving other examples that I know of as we go along, etc., and we create a discussion out of it as well. I assess their retention by quizzing them, doing research, some of the activities, and even creating our own activities and agreeing upon them as a class. This helps all of our different learning styles achieve success within the units.

We thank you so much for this addition to our classroom!

  4. Thank you for letting us know about how you are using the United States History Album in your Montessori classroom. The stories told by the Great Lessons in the Montessori Curriculum give such credence to using the art of storytelling to inspire children to want to learn more. How wonderful to see you using the story telling technique in your United States history lessons. I’m sure it leaves your students wanting to find out more. I also enjoyed hearing how this addresses the different learning styles in your Montessori classroom. I hope you and your students enjoy these United States history lessons for years to come.
